How to use a vehicle history report

Learn what a vehicle history report can reveal, what it may miss and which VIN, title, recall and inspection checks still matter before buying.

Match the report to the vehicle

Confirm that the 17-character VIN on the report matches the VIN on the vehicle and its paperwork. Review the title information, odometer records and reported loss or salvage history for entries that need explanation.

NMVTIS-approved providers offer reports intended to help consumers identify title fraud, unsafe vehicles and stolen vehicles being resold. Follow the official consumer-access links rather than an unfamiliar search advertisement.

Know what a report may not show

A report reflects information supplied to its data sources. It may not contain every accident, repair or mechanical issue, and it should not be treated as a guarantee of current condition.

Ask about available service records and compare dates, mileage and ownership events for consistency. If an entry is unclear, pause and request supporting information.

Add recall and inspection checks

Use NHTSA's VIN search to check for unrepaired safety recalls. Recall data can change, so check again later and follow manufacturer instructions for any open recall.

The FTC recommends considering an independent mechanical inspection because a history report typically does not list mechanical problems. Treat the report, recall search, inspection and test drive as complementary checks.
