Used-car shopping

A practical used-car buying checklist

Use this practical checklist to compare a used car, confirm its history and recall status, plan an inspection and understand the deal before signing.

Start with the vehicle and the full budget

Write down how you will use the vehicle, the features you need and a budget that includes more than the advertised price. Registration, insurance, fuel and maintenance all affect the cost of ownership.

Compare the year, make, model, trim, mileage, asking price, VIN and stock number on each listing. Ask the dealership to confirm that the vehicle is available at the showroom before you travel.

Check records, recalls and condition

Review the FTC Buyers Guide for warranty information and whether the vehicle is offered as-is. Obtain a vehicle history report, then use the VIN to check for open safety recalls through NHTSA.

A history report does not replace a mechanical inspection. Consider an independent inspection and ask for a written report that identifies the vehicle and any recommended repairs.

Test-drive and review the paperwork

During the test drive, check visibility, seating position, controls, climate operation and the features you expect to use. Listen for unusual sounds and note warning lights or concerns to discuss.

Before signing, read the purchase and financing documents, confirm the out-the-door price and make sure any promises are in writing. Ask questions until the price, fees, coverage and next steps are clear.
