Start with your passengers and your ordinary week
Shopping for a used family SUV means considering more than the driver's seat. School trips, visiting relatives, weekend luggage and the space at home all deserve a place in the comparison. The Kia Telluride and BMW X7 give shoppers two models to investigate without assuming that a badge settles the decision.
This research guide uses the 2022 Telluride AWD and 2022 X7 xDrive40i as examples represented in Picasso Imports' listings. It compares published fuel information and practical shopping questions. Equipment, seating arrangements, condition and availability must be confirmed on the actual vehicle.
The same mpg can produce a different fuel budget
The EPA lists both examples at 21 mpg combined, with 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. The Telluride entry uses regular gasoline and a 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine. The X7 entry uses premium gasoline and a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder mild-hybrid powertrain. Equal mpg does not necessarily mean equal fuel spending.
For an illustration, assume 12,000 miles a year, $3.50 per gallon for regular and $4 for premium. At 21 mpg, that is about $2,000 for the Telluride and $2,286 for the X7. These are example prices and calculated costs, not current pump prices or measured results. Use your expected mileage, local prices and the manufacturer's fuel instructions.
| Vehicle | Combined mpg | EPA listed fuel | Illustrative annual fuel cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 Kia Telluride AWD | 21 | Regular gasoline | $2,000 |
| 2022 BMW X7 xDrive40i | 21 | Premium gasoline | $2,286 |

Check the seats with the people who will use them
Confirm the installed second-row seating layout and total seating capacity. Try access to the back row with your normal passenger and child-seat needs in mind, following the vehicle and child-seat instructions. Check whether the adults or older children who will sit there can enter and settle comfortably.
Test rear climate controls and seat-folding functions while parked. Load your regular luggage with the necessary seats upright. A maximum cargo figure measured with seats folded cannot tell you whether the bags for a fully occupied family trip will fit.
Compare equipment and upcoming work together
List the features your family uses every week, then verify them on each car. Cameras, parking assistance, phone connectivity, seat adjustments and rear-seat conveniences should be checked individually. Optional equipment can make two examples of the same model feel quite different to own.
Request service records and an assessment of upcoming maintenance. Price insurance and replacement tires for each VIN and wheel setup. A family vehicle needs room in the household budget for those costs alongside fuel and the purchase itself.
Choose the vehicle that makes family travel easier
The Telluride example is a useful starting point if its seating and equipment meet your needs and the regular-fuel budget suits you. Include the X7 if the particular car's cabin, features and driving experience justify its full ownership costs to your family. Let the vehicle inspection and your own practical checks shape the final decision.
