Compare the configuration before choosing the badge
A used European sedan can bring an engine, cabin or driving character you have wanted for years within reach. The useful comparison starts with the individual cars: a six-cylinder BMW, a four-cylinder Mercedes-Benz and an Audi quattro are different propositions even when their asking prices overlap.
Our examples are the automatic 2016 BMW 340i with rear-wheel drive, 2016 Mercedes-Benz C 300 4MATIC and automatic 2014 Audi A4 quattro 2.0T. These configurations reflect models represented in Picasso Imports' listings. The Audi is an older model year, so this is a used-car shopping comparison rather than a same-year road test.
What the published figures tell you
The EPA entries distinguish the six-cylinder BMW from the two four-cylinder cars, and the BMW's rear-wheel drive from the all-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz and Audi examples. Use the gasoline ratings below for these specific automatic versions; manual transmissions and other engines have separate entries.
All three EPA gasoline entries use premium fuel. Follow the individual vehicle's fuel requirements and compare the fuel you will actually purchase. The Audi entry also lists E85 separately; its gasoline mpg must not be used to estimate E85 consumption.
| Vehicle | Engine | Drive | Combined mpg |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016 BMW 340i | 3.0-liter turbo six-cylinder | Rear-wheel drive | 25 |
| 2016 Mercedes-Benz C 300 4MATIC | 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder | All-wheel drive | 27 |
| 2014 Audi A4 quattro 2.0T | 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder | All-wheel drive | 23 |

Put the fuel difference in perspective
Using an assumed $4 per gallon, 100 miles would cost approximately $16.00 in the BMW, $14.81 in the Mercedes-Benz and $17.39 in the Audi at their combined EPA ratings. Your mileage and fuel prices will differ. The calculation shows how to compare a recurring expense; it does not establish which used car is the better purchase.
A difference in asking price, needed maintenance or fitted tires may matter more to your first-year budget. Write those items beside your fuel estimate so you can assess them together.
Comfort and equipment need an individual check
Adjust the seat, steering wheel and mirrors before setting off. Try familiar road surfaces and a highway section where practical. Notice whether the seat supports you, whether rear passengers fit and whether the controls are comfortable to use.
Check the actual car for heated seats, cameras, parking sensors, phone connectivity and other must-have features. Trim names and badges are not a substitute for verifying installed equipment. Pair your phone while parked and test the functions you expect to use every day.
Choose with your preferences and the records together
The 340i is the example to investigate if a six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive are priorities. Include the C 300 4MATIC and A4 quattro when all-wheel drive belongs on your shortlist, then compare the exact equipment, condition and ownership budget. There is no single comfort winner for every driver.
Open Picasso Imports' current listings, save the cars that interest you and bring your questions to the showroom. For an older luxury vehicle, make the documented maintenance and inspection findings part of the decision from the start.
